Information About Urgent Care
FAQs About Urgent Care
You may not be familiar with the advantages of Urgent Care clinics like Astoria Urgent Medical Care. Here are frequently asked questions and answers.
Q: Can I be seen right now?
Yes. The beauty of an Urgent Care Walk-in Clinic is that you can walk right in. An appointment or referral is not necessary. If you prefer to schedule your same day appointment you can call us.
Q: What is urgent medical care?
An urgent care clinic is a place to go for medical treatment of non-threatening health conditions that may not be severe enough to warrant a costly and, at times, unpleasant visit to the emergency room. Astoria Urgent Care is staffed by experienced doctors and treats patients regardless of the illness or injuries.
Astoria Urgent Care offers high quality health care treatments and services that are generally not available in a primary care physican’s office. Additionally, no appointment is necessary to make use of the services at Astoria Urgent Care. Urgent care centers take emergency cases that may not be able to wait for an appointment at a doctor’s office. Because there are always experienced and qualified doctors on site to help you with all of your medical concerns., almost anyone with a non-major immediate medical illness can be seen and treated.
It is important to note that urgent care centers are NOT emergency rooms. Thus, anyone with a major illness such as a heart attack, stroke, or severe respiratory problem needs to go immediately to an emergency room. Urgent care can be thought of as the bridge between your primary care physician and a trip to the emergency room.
Q: How is urgent care different from primary care?
Astoria Urgent Care is not a substitute for having a primary care doctor, but it is a great place to go when you cannot get a same day doctor’s appointment. As an emergency walk-in center, we are open 7 days/week.
Our Board Certified Emergency Medicine doctors are skilled at treating all the illnesses, injuries and other everyday medical problems you would normally see your primary care doctor for. But because we are ER doctors, we also X-ray and set fractures, offer stitches, use IV fluids and start medications in our office, making us a great ER alternative for minor emergencies that are beyond the scope of what primary care doctors can treat.
Q: How is urgent care different from an ER?
The ER is best suited to care for life threatening emergencies. But 40% of ailments treated in the ER are not true emergencies and can be cared for more comfortably, efficiently and affordably in an urgent care walk-in center like Astoria Urgent Medical Care. You can rest assured that we are staffed by the same ER doctors you would see in the best ERs. We have X-ray and labs on site so you will have results in minutes. Our emphasis is on top-notch medical care and customer service, making us a premier ER alternative.
Q: How do I know if I have a true emergency that requires an ER?
Life threatening emergencies require an ER. If you are in active labor, think you may be having a heart attack or stroke, or think you may need surgery or hospital admission, call 911 or head to the nearest ER immediately. Otherwise, know that our ER-alternative offers the highest quality medical care.
Q: What are the advantages of going to Astoria Urgent Medical Care vs the ER
Astoria Urgent Medical Care is an immaculate, convenient, affordable place to obtain same-day walk-in medical care in Astoria. We charge urgent care rates and co-pays, not Emergency Room rates and co-pays, so we are lower than the cost of an ER visit and can usually have you in and out in an hour. ERs are crowded, chaotic, stressful and often dirty. At Astoria Urgent Medical Care, the focus is on your comfort and well being.
Q: When should I NOT visit an urgent care clinic?
Life threatening conditions such as significant chest pain, shortness of breath, rectal bleeding, or passing out (syncope) are best treated in the Emergency Room at your local hospital. Although our offices are staffed by board certified emergency medicine physicians, life threatening emergencies require hospitalization and advanced care available only at a hospital.
Q: Do you treat children?
Yes. Not only do we care for children, many of us are parents and we understand and will care for your children as we do our own.
Q: What types of insurance does Astoria Urgent Medical Care accept?
Please refer to our insurance plan information.
Q: What if I don’t have health insurance?
We can still care for you. Our rate is $120 for a first visit, and additional services have additional charges. Please call us if you have any questions or concerns.
